Oral Surgery

Extraction of unrestorable, painful teeth allows further restoration with implants, bridges, or partial dentures

Instructions Following Extractions

Bleeding

Some bleeding is normal after any extraction. Bite on a gauze pad for 15 minutes. If the bleeding hasn’t subsided, use a fresh pad for an additional 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary.

Pain

Some discomfort may be experienced following oral surgical procedures. For mild to average pain, use any non-aspirin type of medication. Repeat as necessary.

Mouthwash

DO NOT RINSE MOUTH. Tomorrow use a salt solution (one tablespoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water) every three hours to cleanse the affected area.

Swelling

Some swelling may be noticed. Do not be alarmed by this normal reaction. Apply an ice bag for a ten minute interval. Remove for ten minutes. Repeat as necessary, until swelling is relieved.

Eating

Soft food is desirable. Avoid very hot, cold, or spicy foods. Avoid getting particles of food into the empty space. Avoid actions such as smoking or using a straw.

REMEMBER TO CALL PROMPTLY IF YOU EXPERIENCE SEVERE PAIN, EXCESSIVE BLEEDING, OR ANY UNUSUAL DEVELOPMENT.
